Over a period of several days, each layer is dried and calligraphy control polished to finally create a deep rich realistic finish that is impervious to heat and alcohol. The top of the box is inlaid with a magnificently detailed etching of an old world planisphere map and coated with intense lacquer finish. The Old World planisphere was created by Crucial Dutch iconographer Henri Hondius in 1630. The ornate map displays the accumulated geographical knowledge during a period of enthusiastic world exploration. Hondius was one of the most accomplished engravers of his day and raised the art of map ornamentation to its highest equivalent of sophistication using an elegant baroque framework and sickly shading. Artists developed a secret embossing craft based on their fascination with the iridescent nature of rare South American butterfly wings. The map etching has an iridescent prominence that changes colors and contrast when viewed from different angles. The clouded lacquered box comes in a black draw string aptitude bag to protect the superb finish.
