Lessons learned at the 'Antiques Roadshow'
I have often equated a fall down to the "Antiques Roadshow" with an excursion to the Emerald City where you have an audience with the fast and powerful Wizard of Oz. It's a chance to meet an authority masterful to reveal everything they know about objects we've bought or inherited.
Unequal to that wizard, the "Antiques Roadshow" appraisers are the real administer, and they can provide us with answers to queries we may have been afraid to ask. As a result we become fecund in in our minds, if not always in our pocketbooks.
During last week's landmark taping of the hit PBS small screen series in San Jose, I met up with some of the thousands of antique collectors who had converged at the usage center for appraisals. Who came away enriched monetarily? And who was rewarded with a maxim in history or collecting?
Here's a sampling of stories to educate us all and tide us over until the San Jose shows start airing next January.
Two chests, but only one darling
Among the fortunate able to hook up with an appraiser were Maureen Brown of San Jose and her granddaughter Kayla, who lives in Boulder Stream. Brown was part of a select group of 10 people chosen by the show standard to have a piece of furniture picked up, appraised and returned skilled in.
Once in the studio, her 18th-century chest of drawers — appraised by an auction strain several years ago for a hefty $6,000 — didn't glitter so brightly.
