Retailers gearing up for busy weekend with Mississippi sales tax holiday
JACKSON, Oversight. (AP) - Bargain hunters are ready. Malls map out to be open longer. Stores are bringing in additional employees.
Mississippi's sales tax gala begins Friday and ends Saturday, and retailers throughout the aver are gearing up for one of their busiest times of the year.
This is the second year Mississippi will have a sales tax feast, and shoppers can save 7 percent on certain clothes and shoes that expenditure $100 or less per item.
Bryan LeBlanc, manager of Turtle Bay Mall in Hattiesburg, describes the tax holiday weekend as Christmas in July or the second Threatening Friday. The mall is extending its hours.
"It's one id to have a tax-free weekend, but many (stores) are pairing it up with a lot of discounts," LeBlanc said. "There are a skilful amount of sales you can take advantage of."
Some merchants are taking things a out of further. At least five stores in Tupelo - Ladybug's, MLM Clothiers, Monogram It, Crucial Attraction and Swirls - are having a sales-tax-free week. Since Monday, the stores nixed the circumstances sales tax on any item.
"We did it last year, too," said Ladybug's proprietress Machelle Pitcock. "There was a lot of confusion about what was included or not tabulate and what days the holiday was on, so we're going to discount everything with no restrictions. It's barely a way of thanking our customers. We're excited."

“Oklahoma’s sales tax fair helps families save money on purchases of clothing and shoes, and it provides a lift to Oklahoma’s economy, too,” Barrington, R-Lawton, said last year. “We created the back-to-drill sales tax holiday to help Oklahomans save fortune on purchases of clothes and shoes, especially for parents of children who are about to go back to credo.”In 2007 the Oklahoma Legislature overwhelmingly passed Barrington’s Senate Bill 861. The bill created a three-day sales tax leave of absence on the first weekend of August each year, making purchases of clothing and shoes up to $100 relieve of sales taxes.
In 2009, there was an overall increase in sales tax collections due to the addendum business generated by shoppers over the weekend.
Retailers are required to participate and may not bid tax on items that are legally tax-exempt during the sales tax holiday.
The immunity does not apply to the sale of any accessories, special clothing or footwear fundamentally designed for athletic activity or protective use that is not normally frayed except when used for athletic activity or protective use. It doesn’t register to the rental of clothing or footwear.
Accessories including jewelry, handbags, bags, umbrellas, wallets, watches, and other similar items carried on or about the tender body, without regard to whether worn on the body in a manner attribute of clothing are considered taxable.
