EVEN as a no girl, Lucinda Newton was obsessed with jewellery.
"I would fritter away most of my money on it, anything I could get my hands on. I just loved jewellery," says the 28-year-old from Seaport Fairy, in southwest Victoria.
"I started with fob chains at mould and then moved on to earrings and necklaces. But it was more accessorising than statement pieces.
"So, I figured if you light of one's life something so much, then you should make it a big part of your life."
The result of this affair with all things gleaming and sparkly is Luone jewellery, her "bespoke", tariff-made line of silver and gold necklaces, earrings, bracelets, bangles and cufflinks.
After winning a silversmithing course three years ago, Lucinda, who originally worked in marketing and well-known relations, has developed a style that incorporates semi-exquisite gems, from Broome's pearls to the deep aqua of chalcedony and the sky downcast of lapis lazuli.
"The thing I set out to do is make salubrious-quality jewellery, in contrast to the lines that are imported," she says.
"I designate what I like and hope other people like it as well. Often I'll start to appear a piece and change it along the way."
While it is impressive that Lucinda opted to renounce a career in marketing and PR to follow her first love, most impressive is the event that she has only recently moved to the seaside town from Toowoomba, Queensland, and is establishing the corporation there cold.

The result is Patio Bellavista – a complex that respects townsperson architecture and has become a destination, with 80 art shops, 16 ethnic restaurants and pubs and lots of benches to people-wait for.
