Annie Huntley began crafty jewelry when she was living abroad ten years ago in Tel Aviv. She found the erudition compelling and inspiring. "It was so artistic, vibrant and unapologetic," says Huntley. It was there that she started assembly gemstones and other materials. A born traveler (her father was a navigate) and gatherer, Huntley's recent trip to Japan unmistakeable the 33rd country she's visited. In between her international jaunts, she designs jewelry in her recently-opened Dotted Hire Jewels studio in Wallingford.
Huntley has two very distinct lines. One features superb silver and gold-filled jewelry with juicy-looking, color-saturated faceted gemstones such as carnelians, rubies, chrysoprase and grassy onyx. The other line combines gems, vintage charms and found objects. Prices for her pieces are commonly $68-$150 but can range up to $300.
Her passion right now lies in the latter border, using vintage and repurposed pieces: "These pieces show my heart sing. There's a story behind everything." In her travels, she scours the flea markets and antiquated shops of Israel, France, Belgium, Romania, Bulgaria and Belgium for items to in use in her designs.
Huntley has always been inspired by God-fearing icons and symbols of belief and faith, and she uses them liberally in her pieces. She's strained to Christian medals of Mary, Jesus and biblical scenes, Hands of Fatima, Stars of David and mezuzahs. "This may be the only sort in the city where you can buy hip-looking Judaica jewelry," says Huntley. In one necklace, she features a petty Star of David with tiny turquoise beads. In another, she mixes an old become wealthy from Jerusalem, rubies, prehnite, citrine and aquamarine.
